The institute was established in 1974, began offering courses toward a master’s degree, recruiting students that same year. In 1984, the institute began offering a Ph.D. program. In November 1994, in order to respond to the changing needs of the academic community and society, the institute was renamed the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Graduate Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies (also known as the Sun Yat-sen Graduate Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities). On 20 June 2007, with the permission of the Ministry of Education, the institute was given its present name, the Graduate Institute of Development Studies (GIDS).

Based on a tradition of interdisciplinary studies in the social sciences, and under the new direction of development studies, this institute, by integrating basic social science theories, will focus on the research of development theories and policies and cultivating experts with professional analytic capabilities and international scope for national development. This institute in cooperation with NCCU authorities will provide an excellent teaching environment in the social sciences and humanities, and cultivate future leaders with top-level knowledge, humane concerns and international vision.

The institute emphasizes interdisciplinary and cross-cutting academic training, and recruits students from various academic backgrounds; development studies is the core of our department with crux teaching and research focusing on:
(1)National development. By stressing theory and practice of national development, the institute will focus on in-depth studies of political science, economics and sociology.
(2)Taiwan and the Asia-Pacific. We are devoting to interdisciplinary and integrated teaching and research based on Taiwanese development experiences in the areas of politics, economics and society. Futhermore, to broaden our students’ international scope and vision, the institute is also engaged in comparative studies of countries in the Asia-Pacific region
(3)Contemporary China. By focusing on the impact of cross-strait relations on Taiwan, and responding to international academic interest in China studies, the institute is strengthening its teaching and study of Mainland China and cross-strait relations.

We define ourselves as ‘a comprehensive institute focused on development studies for the interdisciplinary integration in social sciences’. From a foundation of interdisciplinary academic training, and regional studies (Taiwan and Asia-Pacific, contemporary China), the institute is aiming at cultivating talent with the following characteristics:
(1)Possessing professional academic theories and integral interdisciplinary structures for the task of research or teaching;
(2)Acquainted with theories and practices related to national development, thus qualified to be an administrator with interdisciplinary analyzing capabilities;
(3)Competent to be a teacher for citizen education and social science training;
(4)Possessing international scope and vision, as well as abundant skills in communication and negotiation, thus capable of being a leader in the public or private sectors.

The institute annually recruits 23 graduate students for the master’s degrees progrm (including 3 international students) and 9 for the Ph.D. degrees progrm (also including 3 international students). Thus far, our institute has trained more than 500 masters and 100 Ph.D.s. Alumni of our institute are widespread in the public and private sectors as well as in the academic community, and are capable of putting what they have learned into practice and contributing their expertise to serve society’s wellbeing.

The first director of our institute was Prof. Wu Ji-ping. His successors include: Prof. Li Yuan-zu, Prof. Ouyang Hsun, Prof. Yang Shu-fan, Prof. Ma Chi-hua, Prof. Cheng Hsing Ti, Prof. Liao Li-yu, Prof. Chang Ya-yun, Prof. Wang Chung-yuan, Prof. Chao Chien-min, Prof. Kao Yuang-Kuang, Pro. Shaw Chong-Hai, Prof. Wu Yen-tsun, Prof. Chao Chien-min, Prof. Lee Yeau-tarn, Associate Prof. Peng, Li-Chung, and Prof. Wu, Te-Mei, Distinguished Prof. Tung, Chen-Yuan, Prof. Lee Yeau-tarn, Associate Prof. Philip Hsiaopong Liu, Associate Prof. Mei-Chuan Wei, Prof. Scott Y. Lin, and Prof. Philip H. Liu. Associate Prof. Jaw-Nian Huang has been serving as acting chair since February 1, 2024.

Our institute was located in the Sun Yat-sen Building in 1984, and relocated to the Jing-Tang Building in 1998. After the inauguration of the General Building of Colleges in August 2000, our institute moved to its current address, enjoying an excellent environment for teaching and research.
